The Difference Between a Wireless Booster, Repeater, and Extender

Posted on July 31, 2018  in computer, Internet

A Wireless repeater or an extender works in extending the coverage area of your wireless network.

It receives the existing WiFi signals, amplifies them and then transmits the boosted signal.

You can also use a Wi-Fi to Ethernet router to get an Ethernet connection from Wi-Fi signals

WiFi repeater allows you to double the coverage area of your WiFi network quite easily.

In this way, the single reached the far corners of your office and home, and thus the coverage can be extended to your yard too.

Repeater vs. Booster vs. Extender:

These three are almost the same things, i.e., the decides used to improve the Wireless network coverage.

Well, there isn’t any clearly defined difference between the extenders and the repeaters.

But one more thing to consider is that all WiFi extenders do not work in the same way.

Having Trouble in Getting Wifi in Some Corner of House. Which Device to use?

There are some solutions on which you can have a look before choosing the WiFi extenders.

  • First, you can try re-positioning the router.
  • Place it in a central location.
  • Also, check if the router needs to be upgraded or not.
  • Well if you Router in the best location and it is updated to then the solution is to use WiFi extender.

There are a couple of options for you in this regard.

Powerline Kit:

You can use a power line kit that will allow you to send the internet signals over the elite circuit in your office or home.

It has two adapters.

One adapter is plugged into a power socket present near your router and the other one in the area where you need the signals.

Then use an Ethernet available to connect the first one to the router and the other one to the Ethernet device like a games console or a smart TV.

You can also connect the second adapter to a WiFi router to get a second WiFi network.

Speed Loss:

An extended using WiFi will witness some speed loss.

The reason for this is that the communication by the extender is done via a router over WiFi, a Big speed drop occurs if the extender attempts to talk to the router and your devices in the same band.

Advantage:

One of the main benefits of this solution is that its fast.

It’s fast to set up.

It is fast regarding bandwidth too.

How Wifi Repeat Works?

It consists of 2 wireless routers.

One of these picks up the existing wireless network.

Then it transfers this signal to the other router. This second router then transmits the boosted signal.

Installing aWiFi Repeater:

It is quite easy to install.

  1. Place the repeater in an area where it can receive your existing wireless network.
  2. Then attach the power supply.
  3. Log in to the wireless remote by providing the logins details and the password of the wireless editing network.
  4. Then the repeater will connect and extend the signals.

Weather Proof WiFi Repeaters:

Weatherproof WiFi repeaters are also present that can are placed outside.

From there they boost the single through your property.

This kit can be moved very quickly and thus its flexible.

Does Switching Between Networks Happens Automatically?

If you ‘re out of range of the first network, then the repeater will create a second network.

If the first one is unavailable, then your device will get connected to the second one.

You might see you device detecting both the networks in some part of your house.

In such case, if you intend to change the network from the original one to the boosted one then you will need to disconnect from the first one and then reconnect to the another one.

Security of the Repeated Network:

The wireless repeater provides the same security levels as the traditional router, i.e., WEP, WPA, and WPA2.
